A showcase site

Hello all,
I’m a young graphic designer and illustrator and I’m trying to put up a decent showcase / portfolio site. So far, I’m OK with what I got: responsive theme, homepage highlights & slider and two textpages, some nice widgets…have a look:

Only problem now is the approach for images, and this is key since the site will basically be about images.
Before wordpress, i tried the limited Cargo CMS, have a look to this aproach:https://cargocollective.com/woutergeeftvorm (thumbnail grids -> once clicked on a work you get a new page, or a lightbox with a very large slider & a space for text). I want this grid and this new detailpage in wordpress.
It’s hard to find out what plugin I need since I don’t know exacly how this is called.
And I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to wordpress ??

Who got any advice for a showcase plugin(?)/site in wordpress?
