• The classic editor provides a familiar and easy to use WYSIWYG experience, I can’t reccomend it enough as the best way to create content for WordPress with the least hassle.

    “2024 or as long as is needed” is worryingly vague for those of us that find it essential for efficient working and it’s notable that every year the vague end date is advanced a year. Please, either commit to a firm EOL for classic editor or drop the threat to get rid of it so that we know where we stand and can plan for the future. Also if you do decide to end support, will third parties be able to “take it over” or are breaking changes planned that would make it impossible to continue with Classic Editor?

    Switching to Gutenberg is not an option for me, the “Page builder” philosophy that underpins it’s design is incompatible with the way that I like to work. I have tried it (and several other similar tools) on a number of occasions, the experience was not pleasant. I would rather migrate to a new platform than deal with Gutenberg on a day to day basis.

  • For reference, even if the Classic Editor plugin itself is not maintained (which I find hard to imagine in the short run), it should be possible to deactivate blocks simply by adding this filter:

    add_filter( 'use_block_editor_for_post', '__return_false' );
