    Sounds interesting … but:
    – do you know if the db is still updated weekly? (EDIT: Yes, it seems so.)
    – Which licence does the data have? The code is licenced Apache 2.0 which would be okay but the question is which license applies to the original files (are they public domain? “free” is not specific enough.)
    – Do you know of any accuracy stats? I am pretty sure that they are not more accurate than maxmind because Maxmind probably uses those sources, but this might be a better replacement for hostip.info.

    Hi Benjamin,

    – The software creates its own database. On the ‘demo’ page of the project, it says the database was last updated 5 days ago, so I assume the software is still functional, even though it hasn’t been updated in two years: https://madm.dfki.de/demos#ip_geo_location

    – I couldn’t find a black-and-white answer about the data license on the ARIN site (https://www.arin.net) and I didn’t search the other registries. Perhaps they can be contacted?

    – I have no idea about accuracy. On the one hand, the data comes from the five RIRs, who assign the IP numbers. On the other hand, I understand that their customers can resell the numbers to whomever they want. Do the RIRs’s records get updated then? I don’t know.

The db may not be more accurate than Maxmind’s paid products, but perhaps more accurate than their Lite versions?

Finally, there are quite a few geolocation providers that offer a free service. Here are a few I’ve found:

    https://www.ipinfodb.com/index.php
    https://www.db-ip.com/api/
