I seem to remember that every time I uploaded a photo in the past, it would default to Full Size, meaning that from the upload screen I could simply insert the media into the post.
More recently I have noticed that every single time I’m adding media, it defaults to Medium, 300 X 300.
This just adds one more needless step, as 95% of the time I would like the image to be the size I’ve already resized to carefully before uploading.
I am aware that one can go to Settings>Media to change the default of each size – so I could just make my ‘Medium’ what I would consider Full Size – say 2000 pixels for example, or whatever.
But there are also 5% of times when I’d like to use a smaller image, so be able to retain the ability to do this by on those occasions, selecting ‘Medium’.
I made a screenshot so you could see what I mean, in case it isn’t clear to those that don’t work with images being the most important type of content, but it isn’t possible to upload it here.

ATTACHMENT DISPLAY SETTINGS
you can select the way you want the image displayed from the drop down.
]]>What I’m asking is that there is a way of making this default be “full size” like it used to be, instead of Medium when I go to grab an image (either upload it from my PC or retrieve from the Media Library) and insert it into a post or page, without having to take the extra step of hopping to Medium in the drop-down, past Large then to Full Size, which can only be done individually I think… on every. single. picture!
When adding 30 pictures, and bulk selecting them all (I’ve shown bulk-selecting of the top row in the screenshot) this gets time-consuming when you have to individually change the size of each and every one from Medium to Full Size, and also increases the chances of an error – missing one by mistake and having this one be a tiny 300px or whatever image.
Full Size is how I want my (many) images to display a large proportion of the time but I still want the occasional option of being able to choose Medium.

WordPress ‘Settings ?Media Settings’
WordPress will now save the state of those settings from the last time you used them. For example, if you last inserted a full size image, that option will be set the next time you insert an image.
This may explain why it switched from one setting to another.

How to set the default embed image size
I would be cautious with this option even if you are a developer as you need to work with the function.php file.
Taking one above into account, possible workaround:
Not ideal but better than doing 30 individually.
