A way to auto-generate og: description ?

Unless I missed something, I don’t understand why the only way og: description tags are generated is when you manually add a meta description in the SEO form (on the edit page). Is there no way to automate this process as well? I’ve noticed the issue as G+ erratically ignores meta descriptions when I publish a post to G+, but it does successfully pull the og: description tags when present.
