Wordfence alerted me that this plugin may be abandoned, as it has not been updated in 2 years. Is the plugin dead?

  • Wondering why this plugin hasn’t been updated? I didn’t even realize it was an independent plugin. Perhaps, WP needs to assess whether they should link to an “abandoned” plugin or take over the responsibility of keeping this plugin updated. I am sure there are other options available – but this has been the standard go-to forever.

what would a suitable replacement be if needed?

You can use the development version on Github.

@darkog Thanks, but the real question is why does WordPress > Tools > Import direct users to download a plugin that is (1) labelled in the repository as not having been updated to match the past three versions of WordPress and (2) leads to services like Wordfence warning that the plugin might have been abandoned?

Perhaps it’s just an oversite by www.ads-software.com but hopefully they will address it.

Thank you @darkog. I am however still getting the same Wordfence warning.

@scarne I agree. I hope WP.org can provide some resolution soon!

Apologies to @darkog. My previous reply failed to recognise that you were answering the question posed by @e4t2x0o (about alternatives). I mistook your comment as a response to the original question. Nevertheless, I hope WordPress will soon address the original issue.

    hi ,

@hpthatsme I just asked for an update because I have the same problem.

Huh. This is actually quite weird.

I hope that this neat importing tool doesn’t go the same way as that fantastic cross-platform comments plugin/tool, Intense Debate, which predates the ever-so-popular Disqus and which had been acquired by Automattic in 2009 or so… just to discontinue its development around 2014 (it still works, but will only get critical patches for major security flaws).

Hopefully, Automattic stll keeps WordPress Importer around. After all, it’s a much simpler script than IntenseDebate, and, in the case of the WordPress Importer, it seems that there is no replacement that works as easily as this importer…

@comptedev thanks for posting on GitHub. Maybe that catches someone’s attention…

Version 0.8 has been released with various fixes, including PHP 8.x support.
