Could you please explain more about the site setup?

Smush can only process the images when there are existing in your current server, unfortunately, it will not be able to compress the images if they are uploaded to a different server and accessible via FTP.

I’m not sure how your site setup works but as a workaround, I would suggest using the media offload plugin which is compatible with Smush and will automatically transfer files into third-party storage. Just please note this feature is not available in the free version, you may a take a look at this document to learn more:
