Accessibility: skip link and dropdown menu
-
I just tested the theme with JAWS 2021 screen reader, because we have a blind employee and need to be able to navigate with the keyboard and JAWS.
You can download JAWS and test it for 40 minutes at a time for free.
Issue 1: Skip to main content link broken:
1. Start JAWS. Refresh the page.
2. Tab. Skip to content link appears and is read by JAWS.
3. Hit Enter. The page visually jumps down to the main region.
4. Hit the arrow key down, and find that the virtual cursor does not skip the header.
5. What should happen: Upon hitting Enter and the down arrow key, JAWS should start reading the main content region.Issue 2: Navigation links can’t by accessed with the keyboard:
1. Start JAWS.
2. Tab through all the links in the navigation menu. When there’s a submenu, it won’t open. There’s no way to access those links from the keyboard.
3. Use the links list dialog (Insert + F7). The submenu links don’t appear in the list.
4. What should happen: the megamenu links need to be visible from the keyboard only. Twenty Twenty Two makes the nav-arrow visible and available to receive tab focus, and then when activated with Enter/Space it opens the menu. Perhaps you could make the menu automatically visible when the parent link gets tab focus?Issue 3: Tab focus isn’t visible
1. Open the site (without JAWS)
2. Hit tab. None of the links receive visible focus.
3. What should happen: tab focus should be visible for those who navigate with the keyboardThank you
