    Hello all,

    I seem to have accidentally clicked a wrong button on the updates page — I thought I was upgrading to 3.9.1 but the upgrade was actually made to 4.0-alpha.

    So, two questions. First — will it be OK to just manually reinstall 3.9.1?

    Second — as I don’t particularly object to being on the alpha program, I’m happy to let things stay as they are, but what will happen when 4.0 is released? Will WordPress put me back into only stable updates (which would be great) or will it keep me on the beta program?

    Thanks & best wishes,

    — Joe

    Do you have a pre-upgrade database backup?

    Yes. I have one draft post which I’d lose but otherwise all ought to be OK backup-wise.

    For clarity, I know that I ought to be able to wipe everything and restore the site with a fresh install of 3.9.1 and a database backup. I was asking about manual downgrade to check if it was possible to do this while _avoiding_ recreating the database. ??

    In that case, I’d suggest restoring the pre-upgrade db backup and a re-upload all files & folders – except the root wp-config.php & .htaccess files and the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

    That should get you back to where you were previously.

    It’s probably just a case of this:

    If your WordPress version is showing “4.0-alpha” rather than “3.9” for a non US English install this is due to an incorrect localization build for your language.

    From here:

    I run a couple of en_GB sites that I just updated. Same thing happened to those.

    I don’t think it is. I’m pretty sure that there are db differences between WordPress 3.9.x and 4.0-alpha.

    Have you flagged this up as a bug in Trac?

    No, I think it’s already reported Esmi. I’ll go looking just in case…

    Ah, that would explain it. It is indeed an en-GB website. I guess it should be sufficient then to just wait for an upgrade fix? (I’m happy to try the manual tweaking of version numbers mentioned in your link, but would rather not if I don’t have to.)

    Thanks very much for the explanation!

    I guess the outstanding concern I have now is: will auto-updates _really_ upgrade me to alpha versions if I don’t disable them?

    Yes. My guess is that’s a pure localization hiccup and you’re actually running WP 3.9.1.

    Just to throw a curve ball, the database revisions seem wrong here:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Versions

    Someone copied and pasted wrongly I think.

    This is from the en_GB 3.9.1 archive version.php

    /**
     * The WordPress version string
     *
     * @global string $wp_version
     */
    $wp_version = '4.0-alpha';

    /**
     * Holds the WordPress DB revision, increments when changes are made to the WordPress DB schema.
     *
     * @global int $wp_db_version
     */
    $wp_db_version = 27916;

    I’ve just corrected that page – the db version for 3.9.1 is still at 27916 – same as 3.9. In all fairness, the wiki markup for that page makes editing it a real headache. I’m not surprised someone made a mistake.

    That said, the db version hasn’t changed as yet in 4.0-alpha. I’ve just updated my 4.0-alpha build to the latest nightly and it’s still using db_version 27916
