Account activation link expired

I’ve encountered an issue with the activation link sent via email. When clicking the “activate account” button in the email, I receive this error “This activation link is expired or have already been used.”. The link isn’t expired, and it hasn’t been used before. I recently updated the plugin, and now I’m on version 2.8.4. Previously, before the user activated their account, they were registered in the database, and in the usermeta table, the account status was “awaiting confirmation email.” However, now nothing is being recorded in the database. I temporarily removed the option for registration to be done through email confirmation, and it worked fine, so the issue isn’t with registration. In the email template, I’m using this href=”{account_activation_link}”. What could be the problem?
