  • I didn’t know at all about the Indiegogo campaign until just now, when I went to research why WangGuard had stopped working!

People need to stop calling things free when they are shareware. If you call it free I’m going to assume you are doing it for the fun of it and have another way to pay your bills. If you call it what it is (shareware) then I’m going to understand you need to make money off this and I’ll figure out how to pay you. You can’t blame the users for not tracking you down and handing you money when you told them you were giving them something for free.

Well Wangguard was never free. You were supposed to pay a fee after you had a site over a certain size. If I remember correctly this was about the number of calls within a time period or some other metric based on money. The terms were quite liberal anyway.

One of the sites I govern was at least nearing that level so I remember looking for how to pay and couldn’t find how to do that. As it weren’t above whatever the level was I unfortunately never asked about the details.

If this is behind there were too little money coming in to pay for costs I cannot say. Maybe the terms shouldn’t have been so high set?

I had the same problem of a bunch of spam registrations once WangGuard quit working. I solved it by taking the advice given here: https://wpbeaches.com/stop-spam-new-user-registrations-on-wordpress/. i.e. I unchecked the ‘anyone can register’ checkbox in General Settings, and I use the Subscribe 2 plugin to manage subscribers. I am a casual user and not aware of all the factors involved, so this may be completely unusable to some, but it works for me.

    Well Wangguard was never free

It was presented as free until you reach the certain size. I never got near that size so, am I really supposed to interpret that as anything other than it was free for me? If it had been called “shareware” instead of “free for users under x size” then I would have looked for how to pay.

I am now using NoMoreCaptchas, By Oxford BioChronometrics SA, and the torrent has slowed down to a trickle but seems to fluctuate a bit (average 2 per day.
