Acheiving a 3 column text based layout for latest posts?

Hi there, I was hoping to get some advice on achieving a a simple text based 3 column layout for the latest posts on a site. Basically right now there is a nice image based shortcode to layout the news in 3 columns but I was hoping for something like this layout for example: https://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2mg1qgj&s=8#.VbtOmrfSijs
