My blog became just a blank page after I uploaded a custom theme. To fix it, I deleted the file via FTP, but it didn’t revert to default because TwentyTen (the default theme) had been deleted a long time ago already.

Because I’m using version 3.0 (or 3.0.1?), there is no ‘default’ folder under wp-content/themes.

I don’t know what to do. Please, please, help, somebody, because I think I’m in serious trouble.

  • Download the Twenty Ten theme here
    https://www.ads-software.com/extend/themes/twentyten

Upload it via FTP to wp-content/themes and it should activate automatically.

    Chris

And you should probably never delete twentten, as it is the default theme now. Which WP reverts to if you have a screwup

Thanks for the replies…I did as you have said, but it didn’t activate automatically.

To be more accurate, my site didn’t die after uploading a new theme. Stupidly, I was trying to change the site url. This is how I did it: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_The_Site_URL, using the “Edit functions.php” method.

Obviously, it didn’t work, and that’s when I deleted the offending folder via FTP.

I tried the ‘Changing the URL directly in the database’ method next, to revert to my original site url, but that didn’t work. Is it because I couldn’t find the wp-content/cache file as mentioned in Step 18?

Please, any other solutions would help a lot.

Oh, holy cow, I’m going to cry from joy and relief. It’s fixed. All I had to do was reupload the custom theme I’d mentioned before, after directly reverting my site url back to the original, manually, through my database.

Thanks so much for your help. I’ve learned my lesson; I’ll never try to delete TwentyTen again, or anything stupid like that.

Does the TwentyTen will be activated automatically or is there an option that we need to turn on (before the crash happen)?
Because in my case, after deleting the active theme, the TwentyTen is not auto activated (which I confirm exist via ftp).

Default theme (twentyten) automatically activates if current active theme is broken/missing. If it doesn’t, you can try change your active theme directly on the database.
Caution: Be careful manually editing your database, backup first before doing some stuff.

Open up wp_options table and look for the options with option_id 45 and 46 their option_name is template and stylesheet change their value to twentyten save changes.

Edit: Also look for current_theme in option_name and change it to “Twenty Ten”

    Check your site.

    Thanks grejs.
I did that and I can see the frontend. But it seems that I still can’t access the /wp-admin. Is there anything else needed to be changed?
I’ll try to see if a plugin cause it.

Nope. I can change theme from database fine and still access wp-admin. What error are you getting?

You’re right. I had a plugin redirecting to a broken login page .
I login from the frontend and then able to access the wp-admin.
Thanks a lot for your help, grejs.

    Sure. No problem.
