I am trying to launch/run a small social media site, and I’m using BuddyPress with WordPress 4.3.1. I have the Kleo theme installed, which has a great “live notifications” feature.

The problem is that BuddyPress does not give notifications for replies or comments that are posted on status updates. As far as I can tell from reading various help threads on the internet and the 7th Queen Kleo support forums, this is how BuddyPress is intended to work (which confuses me a little because it is pretty expected by users nowadays to have that functionality).

The most common recommendation seems to be using the BuddyPress Activity Comment Notifier. I have tried this, but it relies upon members having access to the backend, as notifications are displayed in the admin bar. This makes it an unacceptable solution to me.

I am just wondering/hoping if anyone else has had successful solutions and workarounds for this problem, because I surely can’t be the only one who has run into this snag.

To sum up: I just want to know how to give my users notifications for replies/comments on their BuddyPress status updates without giving them access to the backend.

  • Hi @ffambrosia_wp_account

I am the author of BuddyPress Activity Comment Notifier plugin.

It has no dependency on the admin or anything. Any comment/reply notification should be visible from profile->notifications. If you have adminbar enabled, It ads the notification there too.

If you have any issues , please do let me know. I will be happy to help.

Oh wow, thank you for the extremely speedy reply!

Based on your reply, I uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin just to see what would happen. . . and it seems to work now. Guess I should have tried that first Kleo is pulling the notifications (or at least it has pulled a couple).

However, there is an issue: When you click on the notification, instead of being taken to that thread/comment, it appears to just refresh whatever page you are viewing at the time. Especially if you have more than one notification or a notification is from a thread that’s farther down the stream, it makes it difficult to locate it. Is there any way to change or fix that?

A member reported to me that if he tries to open the notification in a new tab, he gets a message saying he doesn’t have permission to do this. That has not happened to me yet.

It also doesn’t clear the notification, so you do have to click the “mark all as read” button (somewhat minor but not as ideal as possible).

    Hi,
Sorry for a little bit delayed reply.
For me the reply notification was deleted on visit. Also, the notification pointed to the activity directly.

I checked by visiting my Profile->Notifications tab.

There is a possibility that for some of the activity type, notification might not be deleted.
If possible, please let me know and I will be happy to update.

If the notification is not pointing to the correct activity, please let me know a way to reproduce it and let us get that fixed.

    Thank you

It does seem to clear for messages and any other notification that was present without the Activity Comment Notifier plugin. It’s activity comments that don’t clear without hitting the “mark all read” button.

However, the “Live Notifications” thing isn’t directing users to the activities in question all the time. Notifications for new messages and friend requests do seem to take you to the correct place, but nothing else really does.

If you have a “member a and b commented on your post” notification or a “member a likes your activity on” or “member a favorited your post” notification, when you click on it, it just refreshes the current page. If you go to your notifications tab on your profile and look there, click on it again, it still just refreshes your notification page.

I’m not sure how to tell you to reproduce it. I’m not very tech savvy. Would screen shots or giving you access to my site help?

I don’t know if this helps or not, but I have noticed that if you try to open the notification in another window/tab, it does try to pull it up. I can see it in the URL. However, it will sit and spin and think about it for several seconds before then loading whatever page you were viewing when you clicked the notification.

I have also tested this with the Twenty Fifteen theme, and the same behavior occurs. Also, if you capture the specific URL it tries to direct to when you open a notification in another tab, and copy/paste it into your web browser, it will take you to the front page.

A few of my users have reported the “do not have permission” message though I have yet to get that myself.

Has anyone else had experience with fixing this or with a different plugin does a similar thing?

My notification for the comments on my updates in activity will not disappear after I check the notification. Any idea how I can fix this?
