Add already created simple products to variable product

Is there a way to take a group of simple products that have already been created with images, pricing, categories, etc. and add them as children of a variable product, without creating new products inside said variable product, inside of the dashboard. I can do this by creating a var product and listing products as children in a .csv and import but am looking to accomplish without doing so with just a few items (50+/-.
