• AS of 3.9 and the new IMCE editor, you have removed the option for “Paste from Word” and have not offered a replacement. This is a major issue for non-technical authors on my sites that compose in word and then paste into blog editor. What are we supposed to do now? Lose all formatting or include bloated MSO styles and formats which are not cross-browser compatible???

This was a major oversight on the upgrade and should be addressed immediately.

Did you try reading the “Welcome to 3.9” page when you upgraded? if so, you would have seen that Paste from Word was not removed per se – it was improved. So now you just need to paste straight into the editor. No need to click any buttons.

Oh – and it wasn’t WordPress that made this change. It was TinyMCE 4.0.

    Thanks for the snarky reply!

It doesn’t work as well – especially with nested lists. The indenting is not proper…

It wasn’t intended to be snarky but it was probably very, very, tired as we have answered this many, many times over the past few days. As I said, the change was made by TinyMCE – not WordPress.

I understand it was changes by TinyMCE, not WordPress. I understand it is supposed to be an improvement.

However, it does not work the way it used to, and sometimes it makes a big mess of things. That is a problem for the end user regardless of who changed it or why.

So the question is this – does anyone care enough to look at why it is not working right and fixing it?

What do you think some of the core developers are trying to work on? It’s not an easy task.

I have actually been wondering about this myself. While I like pasting directly in the editor instead of having to click an extra button, some of the formatting I do want to keep, such as bold or italics, which used to be retained when pasting with the button, is now removed. Are these the types of things that may be improved in a future update? Any suggestion that doesn’t involve having to reformat my entire post, for now? Thanks!

People: please search before posting! As previously explained a number of times, “Paste from Word” was not removed. It was integrated into TinyMCE so that all you have to do now is paste.

I didn’t say it had been removed. I said that certain functionality of how it used to work has been. If that’s not the case, then instead of a rude reply, how about some help? I was perfectly polite in my message and rather expected the same in return. I have searched for a while now and this is the only topic I found on the subject. Do you have a link to something more helpful then?

As I said before, when I paste, it doesn’t work the same. It strips the formatting that used to be retained that I want to keep, such as bold and italics. So simply pasting is not the solution I’m looking for. Thanks.

If that’s not the case, then instead of a rude reply, how about some help?

Were you aware that this is a feedback forum and not a support one?

It strips the formatting that used to be retained that I want to keep,

Try pressing the button again to toggle “Paste as Text” off.

Thanks for the help. I’ll try it out. I’ve actually clicked that button a million times so I’m at the point where I don’t know what’s on or off, but at least now I know what it does and can figure it out.

As for the forum, here’s the the url: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/add-back-support-for-paste-from-ms-word. The breadcrumb path: WordPress ? Support ? Requests and Feedback. Maybe we’re both right? Conciliation? I see what you mean, though, since going back I see no one else was really asking a question.

    Thanks again for the help.

Pasting from MS Word no longer works. It strips the formatting. Some of the articles I’ve read suggest only some of the formatting is lost but that isn’t what I’ve experienced.

Please restore the ‘Paste from MS Word’ button. I write my post entries in MS Word so I have easy access to the content so it can be repurposed. Also it’s a productivity issue. It took me almost an hour to create a table in the WP notepad. I created the same table in minutes in MS Word.

I would gladly pay for a plugin that would return the functionality that was removed.

As has been pointed out many times already, the Paste from Word functionality is still there. It’s just not available as a separate button any more. All you have to do is toggle off the “Paste from Text” and then just paste your Word stuff in.

Also this change was not instigated by WordPress but by the developers of the TinyMCE Visual editor.

I did try that before posting my thought on this site and got the same result with the button on and off.

After some more work I discovered the cause of my problem. I was using the mouse to paste in the text. That doesn’t work. When I used the ‘Ctrl + v’ with the ‘Insert Text’ button disabled, it all worked except the boarder on the table didn’t show. I had the same problem using the TinyMCE table so I’ll have to do some more research on how to get that working correctly.

If you don’t like the new “paste from Word” functionality and you are using Word 2007 or later there is a vastly superior alternative – use the “File / Share / Post to Blog” option. I have added the two icons (Post to Blog and Publish as Draft) to the Quick Access Toolbar to make life a lot easier.

    Here’s a page I prepared earlier:
