Add Border to Image
-
The feature to add a border to an image was simple. Type the number 2 in the box and I would get a 2 pixel border. This is gone in 3.9
How can this be done without having to code it in?
Please add it back.

We actively encourage people to create their own threads to discuss their own issue, but the forum etiquette is not really up for change here. We know how to create a sustainable environment where people can search for help, ask it for help, and receive help. By this we need to keep the focus of topics about helping the original poster.
There are of course other reasons threads are closed, but it has nothing to do with us trying to hide people complaining. That’s a ridiculous thing to say, the features for editing images were already there and have been for years.
It’s not that ridiculous, it’s actually reasonable to think that not everyone’s request can be incorporated into core, along with the statement I made about WordPress’ plugin philosophy.
Do you have any idea how disruptive it is for people who use WordPress daily to see features disappear on a whim?
Yep, I can empathise, I’m not actually saying Nay or Yay to any request here. I’m just explaining the situation. I have no input (although I could have) on core ideas, I am just a forum moderator and deep down a normal forum member. I am not saying people are wrong for requesting that this should still be in core.
I use padding and borders to all my images as well and would love to be able to do that again without a plug in. However, now you are cornering us into searching and using plugins that may or may not exist yet. I would just like to be able to add a padding and border to my images with the same amount of ease as I did before the upgrade. Thanks
I posted my very polite thoughts about this in another thread right here and also on another blog of a theme company about the same issue. Both were deleted.
And this thread where LOTS of others were complaining about the same was closed and all pages after the first one were deleted:
https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/39-visual-editor?replies=31I don’t think this is really the forum etiquette you are advocating here.
Indeed, lots of people are already complaining about this but their voices are systematically muted; the remaining have just not yet discovered what they will be missing.
And I find this debate about “majority” of wp users rather misplaced here, in current topic: does this same majority really need to build audio/video playlists, or use Press This, or even Email to Post features that are found in settings?
It would have been much more productive to just explain why those settings have been removed, in a rational way.
You really should create your own thread to discuss it rather than posting on someone else’s thread, especially when that someone was asking for help. You are more than welcome to help out on threads, but if we find threads are being derailed or taken over by “me too” posts, despite recommendations for people to create their own threads, then moderators unfortunately have to take action themselves.
As you can see this thread that j2001rad posted to receive help is now being taken over by other people’s issues, some of which aren’t looking for support, and this thread will likely be closed for the same reasons.
Again, if you want to discuss your own issue (regardless of whether you think its the same as someone else’s) please create your own thread: https://www.ads-software.com/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting#postform
We are sorry you feel like this is a huge hush-up operation, but the way we operate in www.ads-software.com forums is not specific to your issue, or anybody’s issue. You’ll see the same tactics being applied throughout these forums.
Of course, you are right, this is how things should work – usually.
But I find that, in that particular case, the initial poster didn’t really ask for help! He is, the same way all other subsequent posters do, just complaining. So, I don’t well understand the purpose to create a new thread just to complain about the same…
Do you really want us all to initiate new threads that just say “why did you remove the option to add borders and padding to images?”
But OK, no problem, I understand both sides are upset with this topic and I’ll wait this thing settles a bit and see what happens.
Done. New thread posted. Now can you please get to the issue?
Do you really want us all to initiate new threads that just say “why did you remove the option to add borders and padding to images?”
Yes I really want you to do that because at the moment 17 posts (including all of mine) of this thread have been unhelpful to j2001rad.
Do it in the feedback forum if you’re not looking for support.
OK will do, no problem.
But I would love to hear what j2001rad thinks about that.I guess I’ll chime back in since I started this. Glad I did, maybe it’s an eye opener that there is more than a minority affected here. There are still countless others that have yet to upgrade and will soon be disappointed.
After digging more, I found out that 3.9 broke one of my favorite plugins which is MCE Table Buttons. It made using tables and editing images very simple.
Three of the many key editing options that disappeared are:
– adding a border to an image (FIXED with Advanced Image Styles plugin)– aligning cell content to TOP or BOTTOM has gone away. Adding padding is not the solution (I cannot figure this one out at all)
– adding background color to a cell has also gone away. I want to alternate cells and rows by color.
I posted in the MCE Table Buttons forum. No response.
It’s pointless to me to have to code all this in now. That will add an excessive amount of time to some sites which was previously accomplished in a couple clicks.
This is all being done to reduce the core of WordPress? What is actually gained by this. To me, and obviously many others, it is a major setback.
Just upgraded WordPress…
I’m VERY UNHAPPY about the changes discussed in this thread. I agree with everybody here.
PLEASE FIX THIS so we can regain control over our images. I don’t have time to go back and fix the images on 27+ websites on my server!
Cynthia

j2001rad, You only posted 15 hours ago, and that was only 11 hours when you said that. These forums just can’t deal with time limits, if you need urgent support it’s more realistic to hire someone because threads are known to go unanswered for not just hours but months. *Why should I have to pay for something that WordPress broke* This is just what happens when asking for help in a free forum, not specific to your issue.

While waiting for a solution you may want to try this plugin that offers some interesting options:
https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-image-borders/Come on WordPress, getting rid of one of the most used and important features, borders on photos, that was just plain stupid. Does no one at WordPress run their own business or personal blog? Everyone uses borders at times, especially if you have a photo that is dark at the bottom and white at the top, and it must have a border or it looks terrible. Borders for images are widely used, and we are not in the minority just because you get some feedback from some. Borders is such an obvious feature, I find it hard to believe that any adult at WordPress would not know that. I am shocked at some of the dumb things programmers do. Getting rid of borders on photos is one of those. This creates a serious problem for me, and I should NOT have to install another plugin to solve it, especially when using plugins can create security vulnerabilities.
