Add breadcrumbs to child theme?

I’m using a child theme based on Frontier and I was hoping to add breadcrumbs. However, I don’t want to hack the core files. Is it possible to run the function from the child’s functions.php? If so, how do I set that up? I tried simply adding the code to that file, which obviously wasn’t the answer — all that did was add the unstyled word “home” to the very top of the page, above the menu.
