Add captions to Slidedeck2 thumbnail navigation

I am trying to add captions to the thumbnail navigation, but have not been successful. I was trying to <?php echo $title; ?> to the <span class=”nav-button”> tags within the lens.js file, but that did not work.

Any insight on how this can be done would be amazing.
