Add category before post title

I have a Web site where the author name is defined as a category, so we would like to be able to display each post title in this way with this widget:

<category>: <post title>

Result should look like this:

Jim Jones: The Road Ahead

etc.

Could someone tell me how to accomplish this? I am fine with editing a php file, if necessary.
