Add category in Profile

Is it possible to link users to a category? and to have this category show up in there profile? i’m setting up a news type website at the moment which shop keepers at a shopping center post news… i’m thinking of using there “author.php” as there shop profiles and because they only post to a specific area, say fashion i’ve limited them to posting in just this category using “bind user to category” plugin… oobviously this is outdated and needed some changing to make work with 2.8.6 however i quite like how its fairly simple. I was thinking of modifying this plugin to show this category within the users profile and also control which shops get shown up under what catgeory heading – theres another page showing the types of shops found in this shopping center… so i’ve got the heading “fashion” and based on the category this shop is selected to show up automatically under this headline on this page…. i’m very new to php and plugin coding so i’m still very much learning however before i attempt at customising this plugin i thought i’d ask if its possible to:

a) set a category name to display within a profile found on authors.php
b) display authors under categories

You might be thinking i could hard code and edit this manually, so for insance edit a page and just manually add shops and delete them as they come and go, however i’m thinking of the future and that i know shops will come and go from thsi shopping center so when a shop leaves it would be great to just delete a user and have all the info deleted with it…. and the same when a new shop comes in…
