Add comments box on home page w/latest blog entry

On our site here, we’ve set the home page to display the latest blog post. It’s a matter of some annoyance that WordPress doesn’t display an actual comment entry box at the bottom of the post, but only the tiny, cryptic “speech box” symbol. I wonder if there is a plug-in that does this efficiently and well? Or, failing that, is there a more tedious way to do it with code? So far my search for a solution has yielded no joy. Thanks!
