Add Image Grid To Page

Don’t really know where to post this. Is there a way to add a grid of images to my front page? These pictures will link to other pages on my website. The WordPress gallery won’t let me change anything about the caption, and all the plug ins seem to be looking for widgetized areas. I want the pictures on the page, not in a sidebar (there isn’t one) or the header or footer. Surely there must be a way to do this with some html or something. ??
