• I have just started building my site with WordPress but I’m not succeeding at doing the most basic of tasks.

I essentially want my site to have a background image, and then have buttons on specific locations that link to other pages. Ideally it would look like a computer desktop screen. But I am not able to move objects anywhere, there is a “move” option but when I drag a block, it stays in place or only moves above or below text (which I don’t have, since I only have a background image). I also haven’t found a place to specify the x, y coordinates of an object so I’m pretty much stuck and it’s very frustrating.

Does anyone know how to do this?

  • Hello, this is an interesting use case.

It sounds like you’re using the standard Gutenberg editor to create the page; however, Gutenberg is a block-based editor and I believe it’s not well suited to creating the freeform positioning you’re looking for.

With that in mind, I would recommend using Elementor or another page builder for your use case.

You’ll want to look for builders that allow you to do absolute and relative positioning of elements on the page. In case it’s helpful, here’s an article with more info on absolute, relative, and fixed positioning.

Alternatively, another way to achieve the look you’re going for is to code the page yourself, which would likely be the most flexible if you’re able to do it.

Otherwise, I think a page builder can give you the functionality you need, or come pretty close. You can search for “WordPress page builders” or similar using any search engine and a variety of results should pop up.
