• Recently started a writing job client that includes some minor WP modifications on pre-existing blogs. Noticed a strange & inconvenient issue with one of them:

When in the Add/Edit Post screens, the formatting menu is strangely limited. The menu buttons are all text (no icons), about half the options aren’t even present, and the post only displays in HTML format – there’s not even a tab for Visual display.

The installation was 3.3 when I got to it – updated to 3.3.1, but the problem persists. Anyone know what this could be?

Sorry, the client does not want it public for now.

Then check for a virus. https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/scanner/

Then disable all the plugins and see if there is a change. You should also switch to the default theme to rule out theme problems.

And tell “the client” that all the crystal balls are checked out so there won’t be a lot of help possible.

Yeah, I’ve done all of those. Menu is still crippled even with the default theme.

Let me reiterate that the issue is in the backend/control panel, not the actual template(s) as viewed publicly.

Yes, I know and lately that has occasionally been a sign of a virus. Ruled out plugins and theme.

Javascript conflict possible also. Does this happen on different browsers, different computers and different networks?

Thank you for your help btw…

But yes, the problem seems to occur across browsers/computers/networks. The virus/malware scan picked up nothing.

Double check the dashboard users, your profile and make sure Disable Visual Editor is not checked.

Delete the wp-includes and wp-admin folders. DO NOT touch the wp-content folder or the wp-config.php file.

Download a fresh copy of wp 3.3.1. Extract the wp-includes and wp-admin folders and upload them to the server. Make sure your ftp program is set for ascii or automatic not binary. Check the log after the transfer to see if all files made it.

Ohhhh, Disable Visual Editor *was* checked. Had no idea that existed or why it would be disabled (again, it wasn’t my blog installation to start with). Problem solved, many thanks.

Yahoo! Please mark resolved if you get a chance.
