Add/Remove trailing slash from canonical urls

All in One SEO Pack shouldn’t be removing the trailing slash, but since you didn’t post your actual URL there isn’t really much to go on.

Only up to step #3, upper management doesn’t even want to hear about deactivating plugins needed for production on the live site ??

We could create a staging site and test it there but wanted to try first option first if that was an option – To send URL through private channel to see if you could spot anything silly or simple straight away.

I certainly recommend doing the troubleshooting on a development site. You can also use https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ to test deactivating/activating different plugins only for your sessions. https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/#troubleshooting

Just in case it helps anyone, we were able to sort this issue by manually editing the file “aioseop_class.php” and adding a forward slash to line 3803

We changed line 3803 from this:

echo '<link rel="canonical" href="' . esc_url( $url ) . '" />' . "\n";

To this:

echo '<link rel="canonical" href="' . esc_url( $url ) . '/" />' . "\n";

Just to be clear, we absolutely do not recommend editing the plugin code, and nobody else encountering this issue should be doing this.
Anyone else encountering this issue should use the troubleshooting steps I linked to above to narrow down a plugin/theme conflict and then work with us to find the problem/solution.

If you for some reason do want to change the url, it’s much better to use our API filter hook: aioseop_canonical_url
