add secondary menu under main menu on sub-directories

I would like to add a secondary menu under the main menu on the sub-directories web pages. The secondary menu needs to be displayed in a horizontal fashion. This menu will display categories from their respective sub-directory. I am fairly new at wordpress so I need detailed instructions.
