Add Space around images

You would add space around the images using custom CSS (either padding or margin):

.instagram-pics li {
    padding: 5px;
}

I did that before…only added space between horizontally and not vertically.

Sounds like theme CSS may be interfering with your custom CSS. As this is not a plugin issue there is not a great deal I can do to help.
