Add thumbnail image to news item synopsis

On the category archive page, that should be the job of your theme.

You’re using the Twenty Twenty theme, which has this feature.

All you’re left to do is add a “Featured Image” in the post editor for the theme to use.

Next Question. I really wanted it left aligned to the summary text to show more posts per screen. Is that possible?

This, and all other layout issues and the “look-and-feel” of your site are controlled by the theme you use.

Unfortunately, the TwentyTwenty theme (and all the other default WordPress themes) have very few dashboard customization options, and all changes have to be done via code. This is great for developers to build upon and create their own unique themes, but not so great for end-users who just want to customize their site.

I took a quick look at the theme’s code, and it seems there’ll be quite a lot of code changes needed to achieve the little change you desire.

So my recommendation would be to switch to a new theme that is as close to your desired layout and look as possible… so that any further customizations will be minimal. And themes like Kadence, Astra, Ocean, etc can easily be customized from the dashboard without resorting to writing custom code.
