Added new secondary sidebar but widgets are not visible

I’ve added a new sidebar by updating the functions.php and placed the sidebar in the footer.php. I can see the new sidebar in the widgets panel, and I am able to drag widgets to it, but I cannot see them on the site. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
