• I am having trouble trying to upload a theme that I purchased outside of WordPress: https://themeforest.net/

    According to this site: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Appearance_Themes_SubPanel#Using_the_FTP_method

(scroll to the bottom and read: “Using the FTP method”) it says that I can upload the theme that I downloaded from the themeforest.net and transfer it through the FTP to the host, which is connected to WordPress. I followed the directions and uploaded the files to the server, however I cannot find the theme that I had uploaded.

I went to Appearance>Themes and tried searching the theme name, but it’s nowhere to be found.

Somebody help! I am new to this! What can I do?

It says it cannot be found… how can I post it on here? Do you have an email so I can send you the screen shot?

Wait, I just noticed something… at the bottom of your page it says “Theme: TwentyTen Blog at WordPress.com”.

When you are at the Manage Themes page, what is the actual URL that is displayed in your address bar?

Well, I do believe we have found our problem, then. Somehow, your blog is being managed by WordPress.com, which does not allow you to install your own themes. This is different than a normal WordPress installation on your own server, where you have full control.

How did you set this up? Is it all set up through WordPress.com, or did you purchase a domain from a host that is separate from WordPress.com?

I believe I purchased the domain name from WordPress.com, but I am hosting through FatCow.com. Is there anyway that I can transfer it to FatCow.com, in which I can control what I use?

Can you transfer your domain? Technically yes, but that depends on how easily WordPress.com will let it go to another hosting provider. I would contact the support (or check FAQs or other resources) for WordPress.com to see about transferring a domain to another host. They’re the ones who control it, so they are the ones who have to let it go. Once you find out what you need on the WordPress.com side, check with FatCow.com’s support to see what needs to be done on their side.

Of course, when you set up your account with FatCow.com, they should have included a domain name, and they can’t include one that is owned by another host… What domain name is currently associated to your FatCow.com account?

My current domain name is the same through FatCow: margaret-peng.com however it says that another provider has it registered. According to WordPress: “Just in case you’re not happy with your upgrade we offer a limited refund on newly purchased upgrades.

New domain registrations will be refunded if requested within 2 days.”

I have only purchased this two days ago.

My recommendation would be to try to get a refund from WordPress.com. If that is not possible, you need to transfer the domain from WordPress.com to FatCow.com. Unfortunately, that’s really outside the realm of www.ads-software.com (which is a separate entity from WordPress.com), and your best option would be to contact one or both hosting providers.

Once you have your domain set up and WordPress installed to your own server, then you will be able to install the theme, and you shouldn’t have any more problems.

Okay, so I’m reading about WordPress and their policies:

    Cancelling Domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/cancel-domain/

    Transferring Domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/

Do I cancel it or transfer it? Which one is the better deal?

Thank you so much for your help so far!

If it were me, I would cancel it, and then re-register it with the hosting provider of my choice. But frankly, the decision is yours to make.

It looks like you can either cancel the domain, or just keep the domain with WordPress.com for now, and point the nameservers to FatCow. I personally like to keep domains with the hosts, but again, the decision is yours to make.

Yea, I learned that now. I didn’t know at first because I’m new to this. But I think this is a lesson learned. I would want to keep it with the host. Unfortunately it says I have to wait 60 days…

In that case, I would try for a refund. Then you only have to wait a maximum of 5 days (maybe less).

Yea, I contacted their support and told them I’d like to cancel and get a refund. I hope this will work… otherwise I’ll just create a new domain name through FatCow.com..

Thank you so much for your help. I’ve been trying to figure out the whole Theme thing all day and now it turned out to be a bigger problem than I thought. I’m glad now that at least I have an idea of what needs to be fixed!

Glad to help out! We were all new at this at some point, so you’re not the only one to ever encounter problems or misunderstandings when first getting started.
