Adding categories to compliments or gifts.

Hello namrons, I started to work on category feature. But its little bit complicated. This is because our compliments plugin not using any custom post types. “Compliment Types” page uses standalone category type. If I convert that to a Custom Post type, it will break existing installs. So categorising category type is little bit complicated. But I have added categories support to BP compliments. But its still buggy. You can find the buggy version here https://github.com/mistergiri/buddypress-compliments

Hi @viruthagiri. I have a live site but no staging area for testing, unfortunately. Do you think I could risk testing the buggy version on my site or should I wait a bit until you are ready? I’m really excited to get this feature up.

Hi there, I have completed category feature and I have tested it. It works on my side. Please download the development version from here and test it well. If you have found any bugs do report it. I don’t want this new feature cause problem for our existing users.

P.S: You have enable this setting first in bp compliments settings page

I’ve been testing it on my live site and as far as I can see it’s working 100%! No reports of any issues. Essentially, now you can can have one category for gifts and another for compliments (or whatever). I currently have three categories up. Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!

Just a small bug I noticed. If you assign a compliment to a particular category and then reassign it later to another category it remains visible in both categories.

Hello namrons, we have decided to remove category support since it will cause more bugs for other users.

Like i mentioned, categorising a taxonomy is a bad idea. So we are planning to postpone that feature till when we are ready to refactor the whole plugin code to use a custom post type for compliments instead of taxonomy. Sorry about that.

Great plugin but I have not updated in a long time because of the loss of the category feature. Are you still thinking of adding a custom post type for compliments instead of taxonomy at some stage?

When I started this plugin, I wanted to keep it as simple as possible. At that point a custom post type wasn’t necessary.

If I change the taxonomy to custom post type, then it will break existing bp compliments installation. So I’m afraid its not simple as it seems.

I guess I have already helped you with the category code part. I cannot add category feature in the bp compliments plugin. But i’ll add more hooks in the compliments plugin. So we can move all the category related code to your theme’s functions.php and you can update the plugin without any worries. I’ll help you with this part, probably next week.
