I added Hummingbird Peformance Cache yesterday. After the initial setup, I received a message that four of my browser cache types don't meet the recommended expiry period of 1 year. Three are set at 1 day, and one is set at 7 days. I have listed them below.

    jsJavaScript

    1 day

    cssCSS

    1 day

    mediaMedia

    7 days

    imgImages

Hummingbird detected that my servver is NGINX. I called BlueHost, and an agent confirmed that. Because I didn’t know how to access the NGINX file, I asked the BlueHost agent for help because Hummingbird said to contact my hosting provider. I read the location that Hummingbird said where the files are located. The agent said he couldn’t do that for me. A second BlueHost agent said the same thing. So that’s why I am contacting you for help.

    Thanks for helping me.

    Hi @sharenmcarthurgmailcom,

I hope you are doing well today!

Unfortunately, many shared hosting providers, including BlueHost, may restrict direct access to the server configuration files like those used by NGINX for security and standardization reasons. This can make it difficult for users to apply certain optimizations or changes directly.

First, understand the limitations of your current hosting plan. Shared hosting plans often have these restrictions, whereas a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or dedicated hosting plan might offer full root access to the server, including the ability to modify NGINX configuration files.

If your server was Apache, you could use the .htaccess file for many optimizations. However, since you’re on NGINX, this isn’t applicable directly. This is mentioned because some users might be on a hybrid environment or can switch to Apache if their hosting allows, where .htaccess is more accessible.

If you find that your current hosting plan’s limitations are a significant barrier to optimizing your site as you wish, it might be worth considering an upgrade to a plan that offers more control, such as, VPS or dedicated hosting. These plans often come with the ability to modify server configurations, including NGINX files, directly.

    Kind regards,
    Zafer
