Adding columns to the top of the page in the visual editor

I’ve added columns on my page which are looking fine but want to add more above them.
Whenever I try and do this the cursor is always in the first column at the top of page and I can’t insert new columns. Clicking on the columns button brings up the content for those columns.
Is there any way to add new columns to the top of the page? I can add them to the bottom with no problems.
I also need to avoid using the text tab as it’s for a client who isn’t code savvy.
