I will be adding links to pages and posts, but most links will be to one particular site (a wiki – but not that one) where page names are intuitive: if I write about Ben Nevis, the page’s URL will be “https://[etc etc]/Ben_Nevis”

Rather than type every time the same 21 characters that start every page’s URL, I would rather have a shortcut. On a static site, I have a short PHP function code for this. Is there a technique for doing the same on WordPress? Is it a question of embedding the PHP in the theme perhaps and fiddling with the HTML on each page?

This wouldn’t be something handled by this plugin. What you are sort of requesting are “smart” links where you can type a shortcode link and the plugin would map it to another link. For example https://[g] can translate to https://google.com.
