Adding content and themes

  • I have a good understanding of css and html (or xhtml), however I have never used a CMS before and WordPress comes recommended as a good place to start. Easy to learn, not overly complicated but powerful enough to run a solid website.

    Ok, I have the latest WordPress up and running on my laptop courtesy of Xampp. I have found and purchased a template that suits my needs.

    Now the part where I’m lost, adding content, widgets, menus, editing the page, how it looks etc.

    A default installation has a basic bit of content, like a welcome page. With the new theme installed, it looks great but certainly is missing a lot of the “divs/boxes” as I would call them.

    I understand for websites, I would create pages. However when adding the content is gives me the wysiwyg editor, however using this it seems to add content to the first “div/box”. The divs underneath, ie featured news, entertainment etc are missing, so I don’t know where I would add the content for these or create these boxes.

    For the sidebar where newsletter, most popular etc is, this would be the sidebar where the widgets would be placed to the right of the content editor?

    How and where would I edit and add content to the footer?

    As you know HTML quite well, after a time, you will understand, only few WordPress theme frameworks are rock solid. Others usually are converted from PSD files.
    It is my personal opinion from using WordPress since its early days, Genesis, Thesis and Woo Themes has better integration with WordPress core.

    As basically WordPress is under GNU GPL, we the users who are answering do not support paid themes or plugins. The reason is – you are actually paying for that support to that / those paid theme or plugin.
    Secondly, its practically impossible buy all kind of themes to test ourselves.
