Adding content and themes

I have a good understanding of css and html (or xhtml), however I have never used a CMS before and WordPress comes recommended as a good place to start. Easy to learn, not overly complicated but powerful enough to run a solid website.
Ok, I have the latest WordPress up and running on my laptop courtesy of Xampp. I have found and purchased a template that suits my needs.
Now the part where I’m lost, adding content, widgets, menus, editing the page, how it looks etc.
A default installation has a basic bit of content, like a welcome page. With the new theme installed, it looks great but certainly is missing a lot of the “divs/boxes” as I would call them.

However when adding the content is gives me the wysiwyg editor, however using this it seems to add content to the first “div/box”. The divs underneath, ie featured news, entertainment etc are missing, so I don’t know where I would add the content for these or create these boxes.
For the sidebar where newsletter, most popular etc is, this would be the sidebar where the widgets would be placed to the right of the content editor?
How and where would I edit and add content to the footer?
