I’m having trouble adding a simple link on my page,
    bluecollarsommelier.com

I’ve used wordpress in the past and never had this much trouble adding widgets to the page and after saving it it does not show up on the page.

if I add a widget to the sidebar for adding links, and then hit save isn’t it suppose to show up? I’ve added many test widgets like the calendar but it doesn’t show up either. How is this done?

It depends on the template, not all templates will use sidebars. For example they are showing on this template: https://bluecollarsommelier.com/about/. It looks like you are using twenty seventeen and I don’t believe that template uses sidebars on the “page” templates, only on the archive pages and single posts. The literal page post type uses a full width layout.

Interesting, I did change the text on the About page but it doesn’t show up. Maybe this is not a good theme to customize. It does not let you ad a menu or links, etc.

    I’ll look for another theme.

Still don’t see how the About page and other pages show up on the site? where are they and how do you add them to the page?

In the WP Admin you add new pages by going to “Pages -> Add New” in the main menu. Typically you then link them on the site by putting them in a menu under “Appearance -> Menus”. In the menu administration you create menus, add items to the menu from the links on the side, and then you assign the menu to a location in the theme. There is some menu documentation here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_Menu_User_Guide
