Adding menu items affecting home page

Hi,

I’m hoping someone can advise. Whenever I add certain pages to the Navigation Menu they either affect the homepage by showing the html over the front of the home page or, if a sub-item, showing the html in the menu instead of just a link to the page. Can anyone explain why this is happening?
