Here is what I want to do:

1)I want to add 4-6 menus beside “?bout me” and “guest posts” pages. Menus would be same which are mentioned in categories.

    2) For example “adventure” topic would have 5 posts under it so for those 5 posts I want to show it using drop down menu.

    3) Also I want to shift the “about me” page “guest posts” page in the footer area.

Kindly help on how I can do the above 3 changes. Thanks in advance.

  • When you are in the menu editing screen (Dashboard > Appearance > Menus), there is a pull-down tab near the top of the screen labeled “Screen Options”. Clicking on that tab will reveal more options for menu items, including checkboxes labeled “Posts”, “Categories”, and “Tabs”. Selecting those checkboxes will allow you to add those types of items to your menu. Create, save, and assign your menu like normal.

As for your third question, you can use the “Custom Menu” widget in your footer area. First, to remove the menu from the top bar, go to your Dashboard > Appearance > Menus, and click on the “Manage Locations” tab. Set the dropdown box labeled “Top primary menu” to “– Select a Menu –“. Then, to put that menu in the footer area instead, go to your Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets. Select the “Custom Menu” widget and assign it to the “Footer Widget Area”. From there, in the dropdown box labeled “Select Menu”, select your menu that was previously assigned to “Top primary menu”.

stephencottontail: Thanks a lot for the guidance. I was able to add the categories on the top page as menus (that’s what I wanted to do) so was able to complete the 1st query, however, I am not able to do no.2 which is creating drop down menus for each posts. Please guide me step by step for doing that.

Also when I added the categories as menu, the “about me” page, and “guest posts disappeared”. I tried to do what you have suggested for no.3 query,
but when I tried to do the last step “select your menu that was previously assigned to “Top primary menu” “is it not giving me that option.

I am close it though but somewhere I am not able to get hold of it. Please guide. Thanks a lot.

If you have “Categories” and “Posts” checked in “Screen Options”, you can add links to individual posts to your menu, and you can set a menu item as a subitem by dragging the menu item slightly to the right. You’ll see “sub item” appear next to the item name if you’ve done it correctly.

A note: this allows you to add links to individual posts as subitems, but I’m not aware of any method by which you can automatically add links to new posts when they’re created.

As for your other question, when you add the Custom Menu widget to your footer area, the “Select Menu” dropdown will have the names of all menus you’ve created. You’ll have to remember the name of the menu that was previously assigned to “Top primary area”.

1.Sorry the first point is a bit difficult. How do I “add links to individual posts to your menu”?

2.When I trying to do the what you have mentioned i was successful (as you can see on my blog) but the the posts that I want to shift are not showing in the dropdown box on the first step. Could this be because I made made these two posts in “Pages”section and not “posts”section?

If yes how can I change these pages to posts so that I can get the options in “select menu”

Sorry for too many silly queries, but I am not really a technical person. Thanks in advance.

    1) Under the Screen Options tab in the upper right, do you have “Posts” checked? If so, then you can add Posts to your menu, just like you would add any other item.

    2) Can you clarify what you’re seeing? Have you created your menu with the subitems that you wanted to use?

I took this screenshot of my own menu screen so you could see exactly what I’m referring to. You can see that I’ve got “Posts” selected in the left-hand side and in the right-hand side, the three menu items are slightly indented and they all say “sub item” next to them. If I use this menu on my site, I would see “Template”, and if I hovered over that menu item, links to the three posts “Hello World!”, “A Simple Text Post”, and “Another picture” would appear.

How are you adding the menu to your footer? This is how I would do it, via the widget: https://imgur.com/T8rhYdJ. And then this is what I get on my site: https://imgur.com/pqom5CD. Note how the last three items are indented slightly.

stephencottontail: thanks for your support. I was able to make drop down menus successfully. https://xplor-india.com/

So happy and thanks for your guidance and patience. I haven’t tried moving the two “pages” about me and Guests to footer area yet, but I am sure I will be able to do it.
