• I’m looking for some help with images in hopes of making my workflow a little faster and smoother.

Currently, I am uploading sets of pictures to two different wordpress sites. I caption each image file once it gets uploaded so that they’ll appear on each of the sites… but I’m having to do it twice – once on each site.

My hope is that I can somehow add the caption text to the metadata of the file itself, and then have WordPress display that same information once it is uploaded to the site. In essence, I would add the information to the file while it is on my computer, and then when I uploaded the fields would already be populated. Bang! Done! Time saved! ??

I have done some initial tests at getting the metadata completed using different pieces of software (iPhoto, Picassa, to name two), but the data doesn’t follow on upload to my sites.

Any suggestions good people of the WordPress forums?

This is already part of the core. WordPress automatically populates the caption field with the IPTC caption abstract or, if it is absent, the EXIF image description. (I believe it works in that order, but you can verify this through testing.)

Your success in using this will depend on the file type.

It will work fine if you are using JPEG files, and there are various ways of going about it: e.g. if you use Windows, you can just right-click on an image and add your desired caption to the “title” field (like this, which leads to this). The title field corresponds to the EXIF image description.

I have not tested this with PNG files, but I suspect it will not work with PNG. That is because the standard PNG specification does not allow for the embedding of EXIF or IPTC information. (Some software stores metadata in PNG files in a similar way, but as I say, it’s not part of the PNG specification.)

    Thanks C W.

I thought that was what was supposed to happen – all my research said it would. But for some reason, it isn’t working for me.

Which makes me think that it must be a problem with how I am saving it here on my Mac. After looking at your post, I tried it with my Windows computer, and it worked like a charm.

I’ll so some more research and experiments as see what I come up with for this machine… but in the meantime, I know I can do it with my PC.

    Thanks again C W!
