Adding New Sites

You have to point the subdomains to the location where the MAIN WP install is located. You probably still have them pointing to their own directories.

hmm, I thought you were on to something but just double checked and they were not redirected anywhere in my cpanel.

That’s sort of the point ?? did add them as subdomains? By default, cPanel adds subdomains pointing to /public_html/subdomainname

That needs to point one UP to just the public folder ??

Originally I added a sub folder to the public_html, installed wordpress through simple scripts, and added the domain as an addon. So I uninstalled through scimple scripts, and manually deleted the folder which contained any add on themes, or plugins I added. I unassigned the domain, and still have this issue.

Did you also set up wildcard subdomains?

Yes, I did. The multisite will work for any new subdomains. For instance if I did not have a previous installation of wordpress installed on the subdomain, I do not have an issue deploying the new sites.

Then your old subdomains are still defined on your server somewhere.

Are they listed in cpanel’s subdomains?

Can you look at your htppd.conf file and see them?

The problem was in a separate zone file for that subdomain. My hosting provider was able to fix one by one. Thank you for the help. Now the only problem is how to have my domains resolve for both https://www.domain.com, as well as domain.com. Any suggestions?

Thank you, Ipstenu–I’ve been trying to solve the same problem for four days now, and I didn’t realize that my host was pointing each subdomain at its own directory. Changing my subdomains to point to the root solved the problem!

I only wish this was made clearer in the Create A Network installation guide.

Using a mapping plugin ??

Map it twice, once as www once without, and make ONE primary.

I had the mapping plugin installed, but did not know I could map both. Do I make the www. the primary? Can I do this for the main site as well?

I don’t think you can map the main site.

Make which ever one you want the primary (I’d do non-www personally, but doesn’t matter).

Normally, you do not set up individual subdomains on your server. IF you would like to write this section in the codex, please do so. Your login for this forum works for the codex.

My problem was not with the wildcard it was with the hosting company. The subdomains I had set up were for separate previous installations of WP that left some residue I guess… Only think now is the redirect for the primary as the plugin does not support that. I am thinking something in the .htaccess file will do the trick.
