Adding random field

Hi,

I’m trying to create something as a random unique user ID. It should be a random 8 characters long field that I’d like to display on the profile page and email it to users upon the registration. Don’t want users to add it, but rather to display it in the profile page and assign automatically.

Any ideas how to add such a field?
