Adding side column to single.php

I’m stump… I’m trying to add the side column to single.php

It bothers me how there is no navigation when I go to that screen. Can anyone help out?

I’m thinking I need to add <?php get_sidebar(); ?>

but the div class of “widecolumn” in the navigation for next and previous story is making it push out to the right.
