adding special characters before category lists

I am using the list_cats tag and i was wondering if there was a way to add a before or after parameter like there is in the get_links or get_archives. I need to add a special character before the link in each list element. Any ideas?

Have a look at the CSS for the deafult theme (Kubrick) – the » character is placed before list elements by the css.
Do you know where this is added in Kubrick? I looked all over for
