No you do not have to use the top level domain for your site.

If going to example.example.com takes you to example.com, then you messed up your subdomain creation, and that’s outside of WordPress.

Do I have to create each sub domain manually in Cpanel as well as creating the site in WordPress? I assumed wp did it for you?

And then do I need to manually install wp in that sub domain?

If your main install is in sub.domain.com, and you plan on your sites being sub.domain.com/site1, then you should, before installing WP, create that subdomain, point it to itself, and verify that it works. Then install WP.

If your main install is in domain.com and you want to use MultiSite in subdomains, so your sites are site1.domain.com, then you create a wildcard subdomain for your domain and point that to domain.com. Then install WordPress.

So it depends which one you’re doing.

So, I install WP as normal on the wildcard domain?

You’re not installing WORDPRESS in the wildcard… these are different things.

1) Install WORDPRESS where you want the base of WP to be.

If you want WP to live in domain.com, install it there. If you want it to be in sub.domain.com, install it there.

2) If you’re using WILDCARDS, you either have to manually make the subdomains abd point them back to public_html or you have to make a wildcard subdomain in cpanel (value *) and point it to the location /

If you did that right, then blahblahfishcakes.yourdomain.com will send you back to yourdomain.com

OK, I think i get it so far but to simplify mater i have upgraded my hosting package and now domain.com is in the new root directory and not an addon. however same problem. When i click on the new site dashboard link in the main site dashboard i get:

The requested URL /wp-admin/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

when i try to go to the new subdomain i get:

I dont know where to go next with this i have tried all the documents?

OK i’ve given myself a double headache, I have moved the non functioning multisite install from an addon domain to a shiny new domain all of its own…..i have moved the database….all my plugins have moved but the installed plugins menu is empty…..any ideas?

ok sorry the installed plugins list has fixed itself….i have disabled all plugins and am running through the network setup notes again to try and find something i may have missed

Did you create your .htaccess file?

Means you made the subdomain WRONG. You did not point it correctly to the public_html folder (i.e. /) when you made it in cPanel, you made a subdomain in its own subfolder. You don’t do that.

It’ll either point to / or public_html/ depending on your setup, but THAT is how it’s supposed to look.
