Adjust width of thumbnail gallery, thumbnail background color

With the Nextgen-gallery plugin, after the most recent update, my thumbnail images appeared sqeezed into the left half of the theme’s wrapper, with the right half empty. I increased the size of the thumbnails and now it takes up more space, but I would like to
1) increase the horizontal padding or margin to spread the thumbnails out, to take up the entire width of the wrapper without making the thumbnail images even larger
2) set the background color of the border around the thumbnail rather than the default #FFFFFF. In the past, I’d edit the CSS, but that would be overwritten with each update and there must be an easier way.Can you please point me to instructions for both of these?
