    Hi all,

Before starting I know there are threads on this but none of which sound exactly like my problem…

Last night before heading to bed I deleted a plugin I didn’t need… This morning I can’t access my wordpress site (www.tenfloors.co.uk/wordpress) admin area. I have renamed the plugin folder (as suggested) which almost fixes the problem (and removed some plugins too) and the layout of the site goes back to normal but I STILL can’t access the admin area… The Site Admin bit at the bottom just completely disappears and the URL doesn’t work – just a white page comes up.

So I know it’s something to do with the plugins, but I have no idea what to do to get my site back or log in to deactivate the plugins.

I’ve renamed the plugins folder, and renamed each of my plugins too, as well as deleting some.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Jack

Been at this nearly 5 hours now and I’m really, really honestly stuck.

I backed up, and then deleted everything WordPress related off the webspace.

I tried a fresh instal of WordPress on there, and even that won’t work. When I go to wp-admin/install.php it’s just a totally blank page.

The only thing I can think of is the htaccess file.

    Currently it has in it:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

    Is that correct?

If not, the only thing I can think of is the webspace itself. I’m really disheartened now as this blog has taken 3 weeks of staying up until 1am and I’m about to loose it now…

    Thanks for any help.

First, you won’t loose your posts, pages, comments, categories, etc. if you do a backup of your database.

So take a minute to do a backup of both your database, and also make a copy (use FTP to download to your local machine) your theme files (wp-content/themes/your-theme.

    See WordPress Backup

Make sure your wp-config.php file has the correct settings and that there isn’t any extra spaces at the top of the file.

Then I’d review Steps 7 and 8 of Installing WordPress Extended because you may want to reupload all the WordPress files again. Make sure you are using the ASCII mode when uploading the files via FTP.

    Michael,

Cheers for the help. I’d already backed up, i’ve got a complete database back up and a back up of the old site too.

Just to clarify, I saw your thread on these forms and actually did steps 7 to 8 this morning but to no avail.

At the moment – the webspace has a complete and verified fresh copy of WordPress on it but when I try opening the install.php URL i just get a blank page.

I’ve done an exact duplicate on some other webspace I have, and I don’t get a blank page on install.php – I get the normal installation page, leading me to believe there’s something beyond the /wordpress directory that is causing this major problem.

    Any ideas?

By the way – https://www.tenfloors.co.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php is the URL.

    Many thanks

What happens if you delete everything in wp-content/plugins and everything in wp-content/themes except wp-content/themes/default?

I’ve just deleted and absolutely nothing, it’s exactly the same. This is a totally fresh blank installation of WordPress … and I’ve done a blank installation on two servers – one of which works, and this one which doesn’t. Very bizarre seen as though it was working yesterday!

    Any clues?

And it allows you to do an installation, asking for Blog name and email address, tells you the admin password?

    Thread Starter jackgnic

    (@jackgnic)

    No, absolutely no installation process.

I upload all the files, verify the upload, go to the URL: https://www.tenfloors.co.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

And I get a totally blank page.

I do the exact same thing on different webspace and the installation page comes up no problem.

Or some .htacess file getting in the way?

Also make sure you have a pristine download of 2.3.2 from link at top of this page.

    (@jackgnic)

This is the problem… I have no idea what to do with the .htaacess file…

In the public_html folder in the webspace there is a .htacess file and the only thing in it is:

    # BEGIN WordPress

    # END WordPress

Does that look correct at all?

I even downloaded WordPress again from this site twice, so I know it’s definitely a pristine copy of WP… More likely to do with .htacess file?

Sorry, didn’t see that you already surmised that above! You can delete that file (public_html/.html) and see if that helps.

    No worries!!

I’ve deleted the .htacess file and still nothing changes. https://www.tenfloors.co.uk/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php is still a totally blank page…

    :S Very worried

    Name of host company?
    PHP version? (see Finding_Server_Info)
Any logs to look at that might show an error?

Note: sorry have to vanish for a couple of hours ??

I’m on Version 4.4.7. As for the host, I’m not sure as this is someone elses webspace.

I’ve looked at the error logs and nothing untoward seems to be there at all. Really really stuck on this one.

Just found out that the server the webspace is on got updated during the night. This may very well be the cause. I’m waiting to hear further info on the update…
