    Hi caterhamcomputing –
First, thanks for this nice plugin – we just started using it and love all the customization available out of the box.

The problem we are seeing is on the WP Admin side… when creating a custom post we see a dramatic slowdown in the ability to continue editing the post as soon as we insert the Child Pages shortcode into the post. For example, all of a sudden it will take up to 10-20 seconds for any typing to appear or for you to be able to move your cursor to another part of the text. Once we remove the shortcode, you can make edits and changes normally. Do you have any ideas on why this could be happening?

Here’s an example page of where we are using your plugin, if that’s helpful: https://ilsr.org/rule/financing-local-businesses/

    Thanks much,
    John.

    Hi.

Sorry to have taken a while to come back to you … I have been away for a while.

I will be taking a look at this in the next couple of days.

Can you tell me: is the problem apparent when using the standard WordPress editor, or when using the SiteOrigin page builder (as I notice this is a recommended plugin for your theme).

Also, if you can let me know what version of WordPress you are running it may help me to reproduce the issue.

I have been trying to reproduce this problem on the latest version of WordPress using both the standard editor and the Site Builder page builder plugin … and I am not experiencing any delays in editing.

The “heavy lifting” in the plugin should only take place on the front end of the site, so it is hard to see how it could be slowing down the editing.

It may be some kind of interaction with another plugin, so if you can let me know the other plugins installed on the site I will do what I can to investigate.

Thanks for looking into this! We are running into slowdowns on non-Page Builder posts. We don’t use the child pages plugin on any Page Builder designed pages so I don’t know if the slowdown would also occur on those.

    Wordpress version is 4.9.6

We’ve got a bunch of plugins on the site right now – some are not being used now that we’ve launched a new design and we’ll be deleting them soon but here is the current list:

    Category Posts Widget
    CC Child Pages

    Hi.

Just a quick check in to say that I have been testing with various configurations, and have been unable to reproduce the issue as yet.

I am still puzzled as to how the plugin could cause the slowdown that you describe, as it should not be doing any processing in the admin side of things … can you post the shortcode with all of its parameters exactly as it is used on the page that you mention so that I can investigate if there may be some logic flaw causing the plugin to evaluate in certain circumstances.

The only other thing I can think of would be to turn of the Visual Editor button (via Settings -> CC Child Pages) in case that is interacting with any of the other plugins …

Hi, yeah, I tried turning off the visual editing feature but that didn’t help.

But! Good news, the problem has been solved for us as of a few days ago. The solution? We moved our web site to a new hosting provider. On the new server, no slowdown occurs. In the end, it appears that the problem was somehow related to our former web hosting platform – WP Engine.

I really appreciate you looking into this issue and going down the rabbit hole trying to figure it out – I’m not sure what aspect of WP Engine’s hosting set up is causing the issue but hopefully if this issue ever pops up for someone in the future, you can ask if they are using WP Engine and get WP Engine to step in and solve the problem.

Glad to hear that the issue is sorted for you …

I would suspect that the problem is due to how some combination of the plugins installed interact, using too many of the available resources and just hitting a limit on the WP Engine hosting.

I will continue to keep an eye out for anywhere the plugin may be doing things on the admin side but (unless there’s a bug I have yet to spot) inserting a shortcode shouldn’t cause any delays.
