Admin page 'not found'

  • I have two small WP subwebs, one of which is a standalone testing site and the other is linked to from my main (non-WP) site.

    Today, the admin page (index.php) of the linked-to site is suddenly giving me a 404 Not Found message, so I cannot administer the site. Its wp-admin folder and all its files are there on the server as they are visible via my FTP product, and on some trial and error tests it looks like nothing in the wp-admin folder is accessible as they all give 404’s. The site itself works fine and the admin functions of the other testing subweb also work perfectly.

    I’m baffled. Any ideas?

    Running WP 4.0.1 under the Weaver II theme.

    I haven’t raised this with my hosting service yet (gotta start somewhere).

  • Did you install a security plugin such as wp-login redirect?

    I would try disabling all of the plugins via FTP, and then see if you can log in.

    If that doesn’t work, can you post the contents of your .htaccess files?

    Thanks. I have iThemes Security installed and set up to their recommendations as far as I can (I’m not too technical in that department). It’s set up exactly the same on my testing site and that isn’t affected.

    Not sure how to disable plugins via FTP but it’s getting late here now and I’ll try to look into that in the morning.

    You can disable plugins by renaming their folder’s name via FTP.

    Well well well. I renamed my plugins starting with the most recently updated ones. First up was Updraftplus (does backups). Nothing, same as before. Next was iThemes Security (previously Better WP Security), and bingo! I was immediately able to log in as Admin and see the Dashboard.

    I renamed it back, reactivated it, logged out and was able to log back in, so whatever happened seems to have gone away. Maybe it thought I was some kind of intruder and prevented access. If this happens again at least I’ll know what to do.
