    Hello,

We were on version 1.9.9.9.3 and everything was great. ??
Unfortunately though, just after upgrading to v1.9.9.9.5 the admin pages of the site broke.
Looking at the error log we read:

    Apr 03, 11:49:19
PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function using_index_permalinks() on null in /wp-includes/rest-api.php on line 318

The front (public pages) of the site was still working fine. It was just the admin pages that produced the error and were unavailable. So we disabled the plugin through FTP.

Can you please look into that?
    Thank you

PS: We are aware of your sticky post (PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING) and went through all the suggested steps and reads. Unfortunately though, since we cannot have the plugin enabled (and have no way to install a previous version) we have to post here. Please have a look.

    Hi @marikamitsos,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having this issue. There aren’t any general conflicts that would cause an issue like this in WP-SpamShield version 1.9.9.9.5.

The error that you posted was in a WordPress core file — /wp-includes/rest-api.php — not in a WP-SpamShield file, so unfortunately that is not much info, and would not be enough info to reproduce the error or investigate. Based on this, it’s not even clear that the issue is related to WP-SpamShield. It is likely there is a specific conflict or configuration issue on your site.

Unfortunately though, since we cannot have the plugin enabled (and have no way to install a previous version) we have to post here.

I’m not sure what you mean?

The majority of troubleshooting steps and FAQs can be completed without having the plugin activated. (Just skip the few steps that require the plugin to be activated.) For example, checking the Known Issues and Plugin Conflicts does not require the plugin to be activated.

We don’t provide support here at the forums, however we do provide outstanding support at the WP-SpamShield Support page — the plugin’s official support channel. As noted in the sticky post, please direct all support requests there, as that will allow us to provide the best possible support for you. Thank you.

Thank you for the quick reply.

We will try to see if something else is wrong (although it is this plugin that causes the error).
In the meantime in order to keep our site protected and help us debugging could you please post a link so we can download and install version 1.9.9.9.3

    Thanks again

    Hi Scott,
Thank you for the laconic reply

Please direct all support requests to the plugin’s official support venue —
WP-SpamShield Technical Support — and we’ll be happy to help you debug and resolve the issue.

Still. Is that a “Yes we could provide a link -because we know this would right away solve your problem (for the time being) thus buying precious time and help you (which would actually also help us) debug- but would rather post the desired link from our site than these forums”?

A simple Yes or No would suffice.

    Thanks

@marikamitsos — if you install the free wordpress plugin “WP Rollback” you will easily be able to restore earlier versions of this plugin as well as other free themes & plugins. The plugin adds a “Rollback” link to the plugin management screen and essentially all you have to do is click that link and choose the version you want to install — and the rest is handled automatically.

Thank you for the info. It seems like a real life-saver. ??
Although I’ve been around for some time, I was unaware of the plugin. But then again we never had to face a similar issue.

    Thanks again. Really appreciate it.

PS: for anyone interested here is also the direct link to the plugin: WP Rollback

    Hi @jealkantor,

There was an issue with the first push of 1.9.9.9.6. We immediately fixed it, and replaced it with 1.9.9.9.7 with the fix. (In less than an hour.) Chances are that your site upgraded in that first hour. We had a report of this.

From the looks of it, your site’s issue, may not be related to the upgrade, but then again it might, so I’ll provide this tip, in case it does help.

If you have an issue like that after the upgrade (and this applies to any plugin), then you will want to do the following:

    1. Log into your admin site via FTP (SFTP) or the web admin or control panel (cPanel, etc)
    2. If in the web control panel, go to the file manager. If FTP/SFTP (with an app like FileZilla or equivalent), go to the directory with your web files.
    3. Navigate to /wp-content/plugins/ directory and delete the /wp-spamshield/ folder. (This is how you manually deactivate/remove a plugin.)
    4. Re-install a fresh copy of the plugin through the WordPress dashboard. The 1.9.9.9.7 version fixed the issue and will run smoothly.

If you have any further issues, please submit a support request at the plugin’s official support page, and we’ll be happy to help you resolve it.
